Portable Colorimeter for Paper Strips for Heavy Metals Detection

By CSIR - CENTRAL SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS ORGANISATION
Heavy metals contamination of water resources including ground water is a major problem worldwide. In Indian scenario, several states have been affected with high level contamination of heavy metals. In India, many states including Punjab, West Bengal, Nagpur, etc. have been affected with high level contamination of heavy metals including arsenic, selenium, copper, zinc, etc., in water. These heavy metals on accumulation causes chronic diseases like arsenosis, selenosis, and may even leads to death. It is therefore required to have end-to-end detection platform for their detection before water consumption as well as utilization in agriculture in affected regions. In this reference various reagent kits using materials based upon organic linkers, novel nanostructures have been developed for colorimetric detection of heavy metals including Cu, Hg, Zn, Se, and As. Few amongst them, have also been transferred to paper substrate for strip based assay development. A portable reader for paper strip color qualitative analysis is also designed and integrated with mobile phone/remote analysis of color response. A mobile app, name HMIsense is available for image capturing, analysis, and quantification of color response for heavy metals (proof of concept established for mainly lead detection in water) detection. The reader device and app is yet to be extended for other reagent kits/paper strips developed for other metal ions. Also, experimental work is ongoing to further improve sensitivity and selectivity of the developed probes.
