A fire alarm system is a building system designed to detect, alert occupants, and alert emergency forces of the presence of fire, smoke, carbon monoxide, or other fire-related emergencies. Fire alarm systems are required in most commercial buildings.
Optical smoke detectors “see” the smoke through infrared light sensors. Smoke particles entering the sensor, light gets scattered. This is what triggers the alarm. Ionization detectors have a different working principle: smoke particles reduce the air ionization, thus triggering the alarm.
The primary motivation for fire alarm system requirements in building and fire codes is to provide early notification to building occupants so they can exit the building, and to notify the fire service so it can respond to the fire.
