About the Company

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is a public limited company – formed under The Companies Act – to build, own and operate the Greenfield Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR Airport) for a 30-year concession period. Private promoters hold a 74 percent stake (Fairfax India Holdings: 54 percent and Siemens Projects Ventures: 20 percent) in BIAL while the Government (Karnataka State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited: 13%, Airports Authority of India: 13%) holds the remaining 26 percent. The Airport was constructed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) – a first for airports in India – based on a Concession Agreement signed in July 2004 between the Government and BIAL. Establishing a legal framework played a critical role in providing a safe and encouraging environment for private promoters. Thereafter, other Greenfield airport contracts in the Country were signed on a similar model.

The first phase of the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru concluded in March 2008 and the Airport became operational on May 24, 2008 – 33 months from the start of construction. The Master Plan of this Airport was developed to fulfill the need for an operationally efficient and passenger-friendly Airport. Enhancement of the existing terminal was undertaken in August 2011 due to the increasing passenger and air traffic. This involved the extension of the terminal building in both directions, and became operational in early 2014.

The BLR Airport is built and operated to the best international standards. BIAL will focus on the path of innovation, continuous improvement, digital and technology adoption to ensure that the BLR Airport endures on its sustainability journey. BIAL is also committed to establishing the BLR Airport as one of India’s leading Airports in terms of quality and efficiency in order to be a role model for sustainable progress. To this end, sustainability initiatives, including solar power, rainwater harvesting, water recycling and solid waste management are a major area of focus.

Apart from enhancements to existing physical infrastructure, BLR Airport actively incubates and develops digital solutions that increase passenger throughput and enhance the customer experience. This includes Aadhaar-based boarding, smart security lanes, and other technology-based solutions.

The Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru closed FY2017-18 with 26.91 million passengers passing through its portals, with Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) at 197,330 – a y-o-y growth of 17.6 percent and 10.8 percent, respectively. In order to increase runway capacity, two Rapid Exit Taxiways (RETs) were commissioned in August 2017, increasing runway capacity from 34 to 38 ATMs per hour. 44 scheduled airlines operate from this Airport, serving 67 destinations globally.

Work on the second runway and design approvals for Terminal 2 began in 2017. Construction is scheduled to begin during the middle of 2018, with the second runway operational by 2019 and T2 by 2021. T2 will be constructed in two phases; the first phase which will cater to 25 million passengers per annum (MPPA), while the second phase of the project will add another 20 million passenger capacity. It is estimated that on completion of both phases of T2, BLR Airport’s overall capacity would reach the 65 million mark.
